Microsoft is examining claims that a bug in Windows 7 could allow a hacker to remotely disable a computer. The news comes just as the firm urges users of previous editions of Windows to give priority to one particular patch in this month's security update.

The Windows 7 bug, reported by a security researcher who's posted what he claims to be code for exploiting the ...

Windows 7's real killer feature

What gives Windows 7 a strong future is not what you're thinking

No, the real killer feature of Windows 7 is scalability. Simply put, Windows 7 does a better job of taking advantage of the available hardware resources than its predecessors. This scalability edge manifests itself in the form of better performance under complex, multiprocess, ...

How Dangerous Could A Hacked Robot Possibly Be?

It seems like a question ripped from the back of a cheap sci-fi novel: What happens when the robots are turned against us? But researchers at the University of Washington think it's finally time to start paying some serious attention to the question of robot security. Not because they think robots are about to go all Terminator on us, but because the robots can already be used to spy on us and vandalize our homes.

Robots have emerged as ...

How to prevent CAPS LOCK frustration in XP

I occasionally get mail from people who are frustrated because, due to their keyboard layouts or their own typing style, they are constantly hitting the CAPS LOCK key without intending to do so. If you never use it and it just gets in your way, you can disable it. You can manually edit the registry to disable it or you can download a .reg file to do so automatically:

It looks as if many of our readers are installing Windows 7 RC or RTM without any major problems, although as one forum participant, Keith, said, "The one issue that I dread most when changing an operating system is finding all the correct drivers to use with that new system." This can indeed ...

All About Aero: Is it Just Another Pretty Interface?

One of the most noticeable changes introduced in Windows Vista was the Aero interface, and it's carried over into Windows 7. Some folks love it and others think it's a waste of system resources. Some say it makes Windows look like a Mac (which could be good or bad, depending on how you feel about Macs). Heaven knows it's a lot prettier than the XP default interface, which many have likened to a cartoon look. Of course, die-hard Windows ...

My wife thinks that my humming to myself is better than the music I listen to, but she still won't pay me $3.00 per month to hum.

Really enjoyed listening to the tunes, without radio interruption. Is there some way to renew Fire.fm for free or does anyone know of a similar add-on or alternative to Fire.fm, so I can get my music jones on?

Anyone else tried this yet? I'm using it right now and I think its great.

I prefer it to Ubuntu, actually. Has a nicer, 'Windows feel' about it. Lots of different color themes to choose from too.

The thing I like the most with these Linux systems is that you can install them to external USB hard drives like I've done.

This should avert a situation like the one that occurred when the public beta was released in January, when Microsoft's servers were overloaded by wannabe beta testers who were afraid they wouldn't get a copy since the company said the beta would be available for ...

All they're offering as far as Windows Updates this week for me is IE 8; personally I think it's too soon to update from IE 7, which for me works okay. I don't use it much, just for Windows Update mainly.

Is anyone else using IE 8 and how do you like it?

I like the idea of each tab opening a new process so if one tab crashes the whole browser doesn't go with it, but if crashing is a problem, that's a deal killer for me.

I'll stick with 7 and use my other browsers.

I did a big boo-boo! I got a Windows 98 computer from someone who was having problems with the graphics(it would only use 16 colors even after choosing 256 or higher) and so I found a German version of 98SE(figured I could change the language after install-STUPID!!!) as the computer was only the original 98 and I had a PCI video card to install in it from my Mom but it would not work with it at the time. So anyways, I did get an English version of SE but now the CD-Rom is crashing every time ...

Sheesh, my 6 month old nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS card died on me yesterday. I was installing Ubuntu on a spare hard drive in the tower and all of a sudden there was a loud 'pop' and a bright flash then the screen went black. The rest of the PC was still running.

The fan has seized up (well, almost. Its very hard to turn it). That's what caused it to overheat, of course.

You can see where its burnt, like a sort of black gooey stuff there. Lucky I've kept my 4 year old ATI Radeon 9600 ...

Redmond announced they will issue eight security updates on Tuesday, the most since October 2008, to patch problems in Windows, Internet Explorer, DirectX, Excel, Word and the company's security code. Five of the eight updates will be labeled "critical," Microsoft's highest ranking in its four-level threat system, while two will be pegged "important," the next rating down, and one marked "moderate." Here is the advance notification, ...

April 14: Support Ends For Slew Of Service Packs

Next Tuesday, Redmond no longer offer mainstream support for a bunch of Service Packs flavors, WinXP and W2K3 SP1 among them. They said they will continue to provide free security fixes for XP until 2014. Windows XP still accounts for about 63 percent of all Internet-connected computers, according to March 2009 statistics from Hitslink, while Windows Vista makes up about 24 percent. Here are the Hitslink market share numbers.

Vista SP2 Expected In April - What's New?

They shipped the Release Candidate this week and this is a normal service pack, unlike Vista SP1. The new Vista SP2 grabs all the hotfixes and other updates since SP1, which means you need to deploy SP1 before SP2. It's also a shared release between Vista and W2K8 Server. Do not get confused though, the actual Service Pack code is the same, however for Vista it's SP2 but for W2K8 it's SP1 as Redmond has at last been able to align the client and server ...

Windows 7 Release Candidate Preview

After the lengthy delays and angst that accompanied Windows Vista, the Windows 7 development cycle has been refreshingly straightforward and, dare I say, speedy. Microsoft issued a single pre-beta version of the OS to external testers in October 2008 (see my Windows 7 Preview), then shipped a single Beta release to the public in January (see my Windows 7 Beta Preview). By the end of April, ...

This was not directed at me, but it made me realize it has been a LONG time since I have had to reinstall windows. I thought that was the purpose of doing a partition just for the operating system so I wouldn't have to do that.

Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?

Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.

Microsoft to offer free security

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced it will offer a free anti-virus and security solution from the second half of next year.

It will stop selling OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC management service, from the end of June 2009.

The new software, code-named Morro, will be a no-frills program suited to smaller and less powerful computers.

The software will be free to download and will support Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

DELL users? or just laptop users, do me a favour and check out this site in Canada, and I can buy a computer from here and have it sent to my Mothers house.

Her friends are on XP, so I was going to get her a Dell as they seem to be reliable and reasonable.

I bought a laptop, trying to set it up to file share with an xp machine. I am missing something.

That isn't resolved yet. seems to be an issue when I do a search for it.

Many have complained.

I also want to know is it difficult or even possible to set it up that I can have access to this machine through xp?

It is going to my mother who never had a computer and I am quite sure she will need some help at times.

help is appreciated.

What is eyeOS?

For users

eyeOS is a new kind of Operating System, where everything resides on a web browser. With eyeOS, you will have your desktop, applications and files always with you, from your home, your college, your office or your neighbour's house. Just open a web browser, connect to your eyeOS System and access your personal desktop and all your stuff just like you left it last time.
