Definitely a sophisticated operation! I wonder how long it was running.

BC certainly is known for growing pot, I just didn't know so much of it in one place. I'd like to follow that one and see what happens to him as the laws are so lenient on growing.

Second massive grow-op busted
Police say value of second Nixon Road marijuana operation at least $2.5 million
Mike Chouinard, The Times
Published: Tuesday, September 15, 2009
A day after taking down the biggest marijuana grow-op ever in Chilliwack, police were able to discover another one on Nixon Road, almost as big.

With the help of BC Hydro workers, on the scene because of the first grow-op at the 7600 block of Nixon Road, they were able to determine electricity was being stolen for a property next door.

"A lot of work went into taking both of those grow-ops down," RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said. "We're happy to have these two grow-ops out of that community."

At the first bust, police found more than 11,000 marijuana plants in an underground bunker, worth at least $3 million, though police said this was a conservative estimate.

At the second bust, police discovered 4,500 plants inside a barn. There was also a large quantity of drying marijuana found and seized, but the amount is still being determined. While the number of plants was lesser, police estimate the value of the crop to be at least $2.5 million, based on the type of operation and plants.

"They were completely different types of grow-ops," Dunlop said.

At this point, police are not connecting either of the grow-ops to each other. They also have not determined whether there are any links to organized crime but they suspect each of the grow-ops required a large investment.

"They were both multi-million dollar grow-ops," Dunlop said. "Definitely some money went into establishing both."

The RCMP made the first bust Sept. 10. The following afternoon, they executed a search warrant at the neighbouring property and found the second operation inside a barn. They arrested five people who were inside the barn and another person inside a residence at the site.

Following the first bust, police arrested one suspect at the residence on the property. Darryl

Francis Ness, 61 of Chilliwack, appeared in court Friday to face charges of production of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He was released on bail conditions to appear in court next on Sept. 21.

Six suspects were arrested in connection with the second bust. RCMP have described the suspects as being in their 40s or 50s and not known to police. They have been released to appear in court at a later date.

The Chilliwack RCMP Crime Reduction Unit is continuing to investigate the case. Investigators are asking the public for information in connection with either operation. Anyone with information or the suspects involved should call the Chilliwack RCMP
